Discover Engineering is a day of hands-on learning and exploration for youth in 5th-12th grades to learn about engineering, build skills, and network with college students, professors, and professionals in the field. Organized by UVM’s College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS) and UVM Extension 4-H, the day includes an Engineering Scavenger Hunt (interactive exhibits showcasing various types of engineering and career pathways), and an afternoon of learning through hands-on workshops. Lunch provided. Sponsored by the Lola and George Aiken Fund.

Burlington, Vt.–Grade 4-8 students will have a chance to create their own customizable quiz game through a free online course, offered on consecutive Wednesdays from February 5 through March 5.
In this introduction to coding, participants will learn how to use the Scratch coding platform and foundational coding concepts to choose the theme, characters, questions and animations to build their quiz game. By the end of the five-week course, they will have a fun, interactive game to play with family and friends.
Preregistration is required to receive the course link. Registrations will be accepted until February 3 at https://go.uvm.edu/0h7ei.
The classes will be taught by University of Vermont (UVM) Computer Science Professor Lisa Dion. Each session will run from 4 to 5 p.m. Sessions will be recorded and available after the live session for registered participants.
The course, which is sponsored by UVM Extension 4-H, is part of the 4-H World Changers Learn to Code series, designed to introduce middle and high school students to coding. Girls Who Code Clubs are meant for girls to join our sisterhood of supportive peers and role models, and use Computer Science to change the world. When you join a Club, you will be able to learn from fun and simple online coding tutorials, build community through interactive activities, and learn about inspiring role models. You then work in teams to design and build a Girls Who Code Project that solves real world problems you care about through code!
Our middle and high school Clubs encourage you to impact your community in a positive way through code. In order to build the skills you need to make an impact, you will learn how to code from our fun online tutorials and activities that will help you build animations, games, apps, and other things that you dream up! We have tutorials in Scratch, Python, Swift, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Vermont Works for Women is excited to offer Rosie’s Girls TECH during the February school break. Join us February 24-28, 2025 for a week of STEM empowerment and career exploration! Campers will spend a portion of each day doing hands-on activities led by local STEM professionals to develop technical skills and gain an introduction to the work and career sector.
Campers will also take a field trip to our partner, Marvell Technology, to learn about Vermont’s growing semiconductor industry. To round out the week, VWW staff will guide campers through the Rosie’s Girls Power Skills curriculum, as well as daily ice breaker and reflection games, at Burlington Technical Center’s East campus. Rosie’s Girls is open to girls* in 6th, 7th or 8th grade. Registration is open and tuition is free!

The Red Ribbon Week is a time for schools across the country to engage students in critical dialogue about the importance of making positive life choices and avoiding drug and alcohol use. The Red Ribbon Campaign is the largest and oldest drug prevention campaign in the nation. HMS is participating in Red Ribbon Week using the Natural High curriculum during advisory period. Do you want to record and produce your own music? Join us at BTC starting in January at Make Music Club – an after school music production and recording club. The club will run every Wednesday from 2:30-4:30pm – starting on January 8 and running through February 19. All sessions will be held at BTC Digital Media Lab located at 29 Cherry St. near Outdoor Gear Exchange. Transportation will be supervised through HMS.
The Share Winter program at The Y gives youth the opportunity to access ski and snowboarding lessons. This program is no cost and open to all youth ages 12-18!
