Hunt Students Win Top Honors at State House
Five 7th grade students attended the Vermont Youth Assembly at the State House where they participated in a mock legislative event. The students were responsible for picking a law that they want to see change in Vermont and presenting that to the mock legislative team. They presented two bills from our school. One bill that requires all teachers to be CPR and epi-pen certified, and the second bill was an act to change the age of availability for credit for those with dependents and minimum wage salaries, changing it from age five to age ten.
Students had the opportunity to meet state senators, tour the state house, and show off their incredible academic skills!
HMS won ALL THREE awards that were presented at the final ceremony. There were 5 other schools, two of which were high schools.
Please congratulate:
Lydia Spinner on winning “best debater”
Cady Murad on winning “best delegate”
Vee Julius-Page, Layla Hamlin, and Sophia Constantino on winning “best bill.”

Why student-led conferences?
One of the top priorities for our district is deeper learning for every student. We want students to feel empowered and engaged, and we want our practices to meet the individual needs of each student. We commit to providing students agency in education. A student-led conference is a way to put the student’s learning and their voice about their experience at the
center of the conversation, and to ensure that they are partners in their education.
Here’s an article about the benefits of student-led conferences.

8th to 9th Grade Transition Update
February 1, 2024
Hello 8th-grade parents and guardians,
The transition of your child to BHS has begun! Last week BHS counselors came to Hunt Middle School and talked with all of our 8th graders. The kids were interested in the presentation and excited about moving on to 9th grade. Here is a link to the presentation the students were shown. Hopefully, you were able to attend the parent night. If not, I believe BHS will have the presentation posted on their website.
During the week of 2/12, I will be helping students register for classes. This is done online through PowerSchool. Here is the process:
- There will be a few choices for freshmen, but most classes are requirements (e.g. English Humanities and Humanities Civics)
- Students have discussions with their teachers regarding courses that involve student choice (e.g. math and world language), and teachers put those recommendations into PowerSchool
- Students who need EL or special education services will be automatically registered for those classes
I will have your student fill out a course request sheet that they can bring home to show you what they registered for. If you have questions or concerns about those choices, I’m happy to review them with you. Please note, actual schedules for students will not be finalized until the fall.
If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to email me at kstergas@bsdvt.org.

8th Grade Parent Information Night @BHS
The BHS Counseling department warmly invites Hunt and Edmunds Middle School parents and caregivers of current 8th grade students to downtown Burlington High this Wednesday January 31st from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm for the 2024 Rising 9th Grade Parent Information Night!
Counselors will provide an overview of the class selection process to help parents/caregivers support their students through the thoughtful navigation of the Program of Studies and getting ready for high school.
Students will be invited to return to dtBHS in the spring for an open house opportunity to connect with the campus and teachers; however, this brief adult-focused session will help outline the semester ahead.
Guests should enter the campus through the main entrance on Cherry St. and meet in the downstairs Music Room (rm.143) for a 6:30 pm start. We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday!
