Title:  Our First Map

Our First Map

Throughout the year, we will be making many maps of locations throughout the world.  Obviously, cartographers – map makers – have to be exact, careful, and precise in their attempts to represent the world on paper and in scale models. We have a lot of work to do in developing those skills.

For our first mapping assignments we will not need (all of) those skills.  We will need our imaginations and the ability to tell a story with a “map”.  I want us to create models or representations of something unique to each of us.  You have seen in the packets how varied and, perhaps, strange maps can be.

Using any materials you would like, your task is to create a map of ANYTHING you would like.  Imagine that!?

·         You could map your route to school and include the exact number of steps or pedals it takes you.

·         You could map the places in your room you keep your favorite things.

·         You could map the locations around your neighborhood where significant things have happened throughout your life.

·         You could map the stains on your favorite t-shirt or rips in favorite jeans.

·         You could trace your shoes and include in the places you have been on the inside of the shape, and the places you want to go on the outside of the shape.

·         You can map the way you feel at different points in the day.

Imagine that?!   You can seriously do whatever you want but you have to follow the guidelines of the rubric if you want to get a decent grade.  You will be graded on neatness, self-expression, effort and use of geographic elements. All maps must have a title!

·         Title

·         Map

·         Legend

·         North Arrow

·         Scale Bar

·         Marked and Labeled Points

Remember:  Making maps will get harder and involve exact measurements, perfect labeling, and multiple revisions. This is an opportunity to start strong and have fun!

Neatness

Check  this Morrison!  I am so neat you need to pick up that jaw; it’s droppin’.

My map is neat, okay?

I am not big on being neat.

I am big on being a mess.

This is my map, it is just invisible/shredded/covered in dirt buried somewhere.

Self-Expression

This map ABSOLUTELY represents something about my life.

I guess this map has something to do with me… right?

Anyone could have made this map.

Wait….what?

Map?  What map?

Effort

I worked really hard because I recognized my opportunity to do really well on a fun, easy-going assignment -knowing that soon Morrison will lay the smack down.

I put effort into this, I guess.

I could have put much more effort into this.

A fort. Cool I love to build forts.

The only effort I made was in not making one.
